FOOD PROGRAM
Dear local residents,
We set up a food program six years ago by where we pick up food seven days a week at the Trader Joes in Canyon Country and distribute it to people who are in need of some food to supplement their monthly food bill. Six of the nightly pick ups have been donated to churches in the San Fernando valley, Antelope Valley, and Aqua Dulce. The remaining night is Monday. Myself, or one of our business partners picks up at 9:00 and the food is transported back to Acton to be sorted and refrigerated for distribution the following morning. Families show up from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. every Tuesday. After we close the doors at 11:00 we make deliveries to people that can’t make it to our place of business. We are very grateful to Trader Joes for taking the two extra steps that are necessary to make the food available to us. The Trader Joes employee marks off the barcode so that the food that is given away can’t be returned, and the food item is then placed in a box for pick up rather than thrown in the trash. Millions and millions of dollars worth of food is thrown away each year in this country. Our hope that one day the government will provide some kind of tax relief to stores that donate their food. Here’s how it works.
The date that is marked on a food item is the final day that the store can sell it to a consumer. The food is expected to have a shelf life of seven to ten days depending on the type of food. Our program focuses on the food that would normally be thrown away at the end of that final day. With the help of Trader Joes, we are helping to feed over fifty families in our area.
We are very proud of our ongoing contribution to this cause. If you know someone in need of our help please ask them to call our office to obtain further information about food availability. We are also looking for motor homes so that we can get them placed on ranches where someone can have a place to live in exchange for some ranch help to offset the cost of utilities. These units are placed temporarily to allow the person or persons the opportunity to work toward getting back on their feet. This is something that we do with great pleasure to assist those in need.
Feel free to call our office if you have any need or suggestions.
Sincerely,
Don R. Schwenke/CEO
